Throughout this video there is a small variety of lighting used, however we can still look into this. We can see the lighting is high key as the video shows us lots or red and blue colours which are natural, this makes the video very bright and gives it the supernatural feel that the audience experiences when watching the video. In terms of camera angles there is also a limited amount that we can comment on however there is a wide range of close ups mid and long ranged shots, also at the start of the video we are shown a man in hospital this can be interpreted as a establishing shot as it seems the video is located inside his mind. Throughout the video the camera is very still as we see no pan or tracking shots.
Misce-en-scene is another minor part in this video however the representation of costume is key but I shall come to this later, in terms of props we see a cross referring to religion again a controversial topic and we can also see the bands instruments, other than this we are shown a hospital bed at the start of the video, and then further towards the end we can see a bed and lamp in a lightly lit room. During the middle section of the video we can also see trees referring to the set and surroundings of the characters in the video.
The sound in this video is rather heavy, many people would say that nirvana was a rock band and so this would be expected. We can hear heavy electric and bass guitar as well as loud vocals and some very impressive drumming, there is no sound that comes from the video, however the video switches between the band playing and the story and so the sound could be said to be either diegetic or non-diegetic dependant on what part of the video you are looking at.
Representation within this video is the main segment to talk about, within the costume we can see a child dressed up in a klu-klux-klan outfit which could be considered offensive to a certain group of people, the rest of the video is focused around death and religion and so we see an angel portrayed to a man on a cross who we can assume is a representation of Jesus however the details of his crucifixion is not portrayed.
The ideal target audience for this video would be the typical heavy rock fans who like Guns N Roses and possibly AC/DC as this is a reasonably heavy video with a lot to take in, furthermore it’s also very cool as the video can be interpreted as ‘trippy’ for its lighting and controversial topics.
